Training and Rearing

Training Tips:

General:

  • Keep training short, frequent and pleasant.
  • Interchange praise and treats as rewards.
  • When training is going poorly, revert to something easy to get a successful trick (or other reaction), then give praise/reward, then end the session.
  • Use as many training sources as possible — including YouTube, other internet sites, books, DVDs, interviews.
  • Consider going to obedience classes… but wise use of the net, books, and other sources can be more than enough.
  • Keep your dog exercised EVERY DAY — an exercised dog is a happy and better-behaved dog.
  • Let your dog out to relieve him/herself MORE than he/she needs.
  • Don’t leave your dog at home alone for long periods of time – -especially as a puppy.
  • When you do leave the house, consider taking your dog with you.
  • When the dog IS left at home, consider leaving a TV or radio on (not too loud).

.

Frisbee:

  • Use the disc to show it is time for play or even a walk.  (instead of a leash).
  • Use a disc to serve food and/or drink.  (at least when on trips or long walks).
  • Don’t let your dog EVER chew on the disc.
  • Keep it stored away so the dog cannot chew it when you aren’t watching.
  • Use as many training sources as possible — including YouTube, other internet sites, books, DVDs, interviews.
  • Join DogDisc discussion groups and forums.
  • Go to DiscDog events.

Housebreaking:

Generally, you are going to want to be very serious about this from the beginning.  Don’t let the mistakes happen.  Take your pup out MORE frequently than needed.  Consider using a verbal label/command every time the pup relieves themselves.  I use “do your duty”.  Check out the link below and consider looking for more sites like it.
